On Sunday 18 April a cycling event called the 5 Peaks Challenge will start and finish at Stromlo Forest Park and take in what passes for mountains in this city:- Mt Stromlo, Red Hill, Mt Pleasant, Mt Ainslie, Black Mountain and Dairy Farmers Hill.
Riders will start at Stromlo between 7:30 and 8:00. The ride will mostly be on roads but there are several places where the route deviates onto shared paths in spaces used by horse riders as shown on this dodgy map provided by event organisers.
The Challenge takes place in an anti-clockwise fashion with potential conflicts in the following order:
East bound lane of the Cotter Road from Uriarra to the Mt Stromlo summit road
Marked equestrian crossing of the Cotter Road to SFP near Eucumbene Drive
Shared path along southern bank of the Molonglo River from North Weston Ponds including the access to the River crossing to the Zoo Pines.
Shared paths around Curtin from near the Yarralumla Creek underpass to Caruthers Street
Equestrian trail crossing peak road to top of Mount Ainslie
Bicentennial National Trail route crossing Forest Drive in the Arboretum
Shared BNT path from William Hovell up Bindubi Street to Cook Horse paddocks.
The last cyclists should be back at Stromlo by 3:00pm which suggests they will be out of the areas south of the Lake by about lunch time.
It is not technically a race so participants shouldn’t be travelling at speed. They will have an identifying number attached to their handlebars!
Organisers have been given clear instructions about where participants are likely to meet horses and how they should comport themselves if they do.
