Ridden Access to Equestrian Park Over Christmas

XMAS ARRANGEMENTS

The temporary horse bridge is now in place but still needs a flooring which will be either rubber or astro turf.

Approvals have been sought for changes to the lights at McCulloch Street and they should be operational by the end of January.

Huon will stop work on Wednesday 21 December at around 2:00pm and will not recommence until Monday 9 January.

The underpass will be made safe and left open during that period.

The first task in January will be pile driving which is most probably not going to appeal to most horses so the underpass will definitely be closed during work hours for that operations.

Huon working hours are 7:30 to 6:00 weekdays and until 1pm on Saturdays.

A risk assessment will be made at each successive stage of the works and a decision made as to whether the underpass can be left open. Notifications will be via email contacts and the Equestrian Park Facebook Page.

ACTEA has been in consultation with Huon about options for maintaining ridden access to Equestrian Park. This is a condition of their contract. The majority of riders to EP will come from Yarralumla, Illoura and Curtin horse paddocks. Yarralumla access is relatively straightforward

Curtin agistees will be able to cross Cotter Road at the lights at McCulloch Street. A temporary arrangement will allow riders to activate the lights and cross at the intersection. From there they will ride down to Yarralumla Creek inside the fenced government woodlot. There is a bike path crossing and two creek crossings Huon will make safe and a temporary horse bridge across the Creek into the front of the Park near the 3 individual dressage arenas through the existing gate. Mounting blocks have been included in the plans! This arrangment is expected to be in place by

Those Illoura paddock dwellers, used to crossing straight over Cotter Road to the Park, will be most disadvantaged. The Curtin noise wall will go up early in construction and they will have a longish ride up to McCulloch Street and back down again to get into the Park if the Yarralumla Creek underpass is closed.

On weekends and when works are not taking place around the Creek Huon proposes to keep the Yarralumla Creek underpass open. They have decided that it should be possible to keep the underpass open before and after work on weekdays and on weekends throughout construction, although there will be times that it will have to be closed.
