Coombs Parkrun Update

There have been some changes in regard to the Parkrun event at North Weston Ponds; not all of them good. For a start, due to the closure of the old management track by the Suburban Land Agency (see https://www.actea.asn.au/whats-happening-at-north-weston-ponds), the Parkrun route has had to be moved and now appears to include more of the BNT than before. It has taken ACTEA months to convince…

BNT Route Through the Arboretum

Since May 2017 ACTEA and the Bicentennial National Trail Section Coordinator have been in discussions with the Arboretum about the impact of their Tracks and Trails Strategy on the route of the BNT through their estate. After several iterations of design and a few meetings and field trips we now have an agreed updated route which, after all the excitement, is not much different to…

Heysen Street Bike Path – Update

Today ACTEA had a call from the Heysen Street Path TCCS project officer to say that the Minister has directed them to look at the options for taking the bike path through the corner of Oakey Hill Reserve. This appears to be more a response to Pedal Powers letter agreeing with ACTEA’s position than anything ACTEA had to say. Apparently they told Pedal Power about…

What’s Happening at North Weston Ponds?

The observant will have noticed that there are earthworks underway at North Weston Ponds. The Suburban Land Agency is undertaking landscaping improvements on the edges of the suburb of Coombs. The work has been divided into two stages to minimise the impact on users such as equestrians and the Bicentennial National Trail for as long as possible. Stage 1, between John Gorton Parkway and the…

YourSay Community Panel

The ACT Government has established a new virtual community panel to seek citizens’ views about various matters. It is probably in response to the Chief Minister’s concerns that only the  old and the disgruntled participate in community consultation at the moment – at least they don’t agree with him as much as he’d like. Every opportunity to make your views about your preferred life in…

Best of Canberra Mountain Bike Project – Update

Update:  On 31 July ACTEA attended one of the workshops organised by Parks & Conservation to gauge cycling community views about the Best of Canberra Project. It was very well attended and both it and an earlier workshop were booked out to the point that a third workshop was added. It was interesting to hear mountain bike cyclists complain about the facilities in Canberra. Their…

A Dream of Two Bridges

With an eye to the long view the ACT Equestrian Association and the local Bicentennial National Trail Coordinator are looking at options for linking the BNT in the north west of Canberra to Stromlo Forest Park and connections from there to the south. To this end there have been several meetings and site visits over the last few years. At the moment the ACT Government…

New Equestrian Trail at Stromlo

There is a new trails map for Stromlo Forest Park. Page 2 shows the new trail which links the old trails on the eastern face of the mountain to the dam behind the running track and the exit cavaletti to the Molonglo River. We are still waiting for the connection to the underpass at the John Gorton Parkway but in the meantime there are several…
